Title: Finally a good season

Having worked at the Seed Bank since the 2003 year I have seen many difficult seasons for revegetation in North Central and south Western Victoria.

The lack of Spring rainfalls in the past 7 years has seen a move to  dry Autumn sowing for many projects to try and catch the rains.  Current rainfall this year finally sees some moisture in the soil, and the chances of average rainfall over the July to September period being 50% gives the best opportunity in years to direct seed in years.

Best success from direct seeding is achieved if treating the preparation in the same manner that you would if you are sowing a crop - Weed control, preparation of the seed bed, ensuring the eradication of any rabbits and protection from other grazing animals will optimise the opportunity for good results even on the most difficult of sites.

Direct seeding - 2005

The site above was sown in 2005 with good weed control done in advance.  Rows were also planted as a just in case measure with the variable seasons.  On the right the same site 2 years later.  The direct seeded rows had exceptional growth of both Eucalypts & Acacias.  As this was a biodynamic property no chemicals were used in the preparation for this.
